AC Repair or Replace? How to Decide

Repair or Replace? How to Decide
In this guide

The technician just told you the repair will cost $1,800, and your unit is 11 years old. Now what? Here is the honest math we walk our repair customers through every week.

The 50 Percent Rule

The industry rule of thumb: if the repair costs more than 50 percent of a new system, replacement usually wins. A $1,800 repair on a unit that would cost $6,000 to replace is 30 percent, which leans repair. A $3,500 repair is nearly 60 percent, which leans replace.

But the percentage is only the start. Three other factors matter as much:

Age, refrigerant type and repair cost decide whether repair or replacement makes sense.

1. Age of the System

In South Florida, a well-maintained AC lasts 12 to 15 years. Past year 12, every repair is a bet that nothing else major fails soon, and the odds get worse each year. Past year 15, replacement is almost always the smarter money.

The Energy Star guide to heating and cooling suggests considering replacement for systems over 10 years old when facing significant repairs, especially since efficiency standards have improved.

2. Refrigerant Type

If your unit runs on R-22 (Freon), that refrigerant was phased out and is now expensive and hard to find. A leak repair on an R-22 system can cost more than the unit is worth. New systems use R-410A or the newer R-454B, which are readily available. If a tech mentions R-22, take replacement seriously.

3. Your Energy Bills

An old 10-SEER unit replaced with a modern 16-SEER2 system can cut cooling costs substantially. The Department of Energy’s central AC guide explains how SEER2 ratings translate to real savings. In Florida, where the AC runs most of the year, the payback math favors replacement sooner than in milder climates.

Pull your last 12 months of FPL bills. If they have been climbing while your usage stayed flat, the unit is losing efficiency, and a new system starts paying for itself immediately.

When Repair Is Clearly Right

  • The unit is under 8 years old
  • The repair is minor (capacitor, contactor, drain line, thermostat)
  • This is the first significant issue
  • Repair cost is well under the 50 percent threshold

When Replacement Is Clearly Right

  • The unit is over 12 to 15 years old
  • It uses R-22 refrigerant
  • You have had 2 or more major repairs in the last 2 years
  • Repair cost exceeds half the replacement price
  • Your bills keep climbing despite regular maintenance
